I just rediscovered William G. Tapply when I saw Hell Bent at the library. I was reminded how much I used to enjoy his characters and stories. I logged on to the website to send him a note so I could pick a bone with him about the Veterans Day celebration and was saddened to learn of his death. To his family, please accept my deepest sympathy.

I just finished reading Dark Tiger - a thoroughly enjoyable book and a good introduction to fishing, guiding, and the north of Maine. I came away with both a feeling of satisfaction at the well-wrapped up story, and a sigh for the threads left hanging. Where did Stoney come from? Did he have children in his previous life? What happens with him and Kate? I'll miss finding out.

Like others I did not know personally Mr. Tapply. I have to admit when I first read his articles I did not like him one bit! After reading him every month or so in my magazine I started to understand a lot more what Mr. Tapply was trying to explain. I could here his voice saying "Just relax have fun, this fishing thing ain't science. Also if you change flies one more time today, I am throwing you out of the boat. It ain't the flies. Story telling like his is almost a lost art. I do think his stories and example will inspire young writers to carry on the torch. Happy fishing Mr. Tapply, something tells me the fish are always rising now.

I met Bill Tapply in Lexington where my cousin Howard Daziel lived. I was probably about 10 or 11 years old and lived in Newburport, MA. Bill was one year older than I. His name came into my life again when 1) my cousin told me Bill had died; and 2) my son, an ardent fisherman, wanted to subscribe to American Angler. I believe I met Bill's mother once.
