Thicker Than WaterReviewRuth Morning Star
is a unique woman-- a member of a special Sisterhood that follows ancient
pagan beliefs. It was those pagan rituals and Ruth's unusual abilities
to alter her body's functions that enabled her to survive Nazi medical
experiments in the forties. Now she lives a reclusive life dedicated to
her beliefs in the Goddess and helping others who have chosen the same
path. Rachel is Ruth's daughter and a doctor of medicine. She has never
followed the beliefs of her mother, although she uses some of Ruth's teachings
in her medicine. Rachel runs an AIDS hospice, much to the dismay of the
people who live in her small town of Loomis, Vermont. But like her mother,
she is strong-willed and dedicated, both to her patients and her fourteen
year old son, Jake. When Jake and Ruth disappear mysteriously, Rachel
suspects it has something to do with her mother's beliefs and the Sisterhood
she belongs to. Rachel gets assistance from Daniel McIntyre, a television
producer who wants to do a show about the AIDS hospice. Though Rachel
wants nothing to do with the media and turns him down, Daniel insists
on helping her when he hears about Jake's disappearance. He has reason
to believe that he may have indirectly caused it. Rachel and Daniel have
very little to go on, and the FBI isn't much help. There hasn't been a
ransom note and no one can figure out why someone would kidnap an elderly
woman and a teenage boy. Rachel and Daniel believe that the kidnappers
may have taken Ruth and Jake to Belize, and they follow the trail. Once
in Belize, they enlist the aid of a retired CIA agent. With his guidance,
they are able to find a source who may be able to direct them to the kidnappers.
It becomes clear that the kidnapping is indeed linked to Ruth's past and
the horrors of the war are not yet over. Together, Rachel and Daniel are
drawn into a web of madness and evil. Turning to Daniel in her time of
need seems natural, though Rachel hardly knows him. Their relationship
blossoms despite their difficult circumstances and the danger they face.
But will they be able to rescue Jake and Ruth before it's too late?Fascinating!
